FESTIVALS

For one day each year, residents and visitors in Utrecht are granted access to private gardens and green spaces that normally remain closed to the public. The event, known as Open Garden Day Utrecht (Open Tuinen Dagen Utrecht), has become one of the city’s most anticipated cultural and environmental initiatives, opening hidden urban oases throughout the historic centre.
Since its first edition in 2011, the Kees Eijrond Foundation has supported the initiative through financial contributions and by offering complimentary coffee at De Winkel van Sinkel to passe-partout holders, helping expand public access to around 50 private gardens and contributing to the event’s growing visibility, which attracts more than 2,000 visitors annually.
Among the highlights is the garden at K.F. Hein Fonds, located at Maliesingel 28, where visitors can explore a French-style garden framed by mature trees and geometric boxwood hedges. The site also features bronze sculptures by artists including Dick Aerts, Amiran Djanashvili, Joop Hekman and Pieter d’Hont, surrounding a fountain designed by Peter Breed.
One of the new additions this year is the garden surrounding the large Rabobank building visible from passing trains. Designed around principles of biodiversity and sustainability, the space includes an extensive water feature and more than 300 plant species.
