DRAMATIC READING

S.O.S. That Night (S.O.S. Aquela Noite)

Reflection and staged reading of the work and thought of Almada Negreiros

30 Oct 2024

The Coletivo Sul will present, in a session open to the public, the theatrical project S.O.S. Aquela noite (S.O.S. That Night), a staging of little-known or unpublished texts by Almada Negreiros, which won the competition held by the Directorate-General for the Arts and is supported by KEF, among other institutions. The group's actors will perform a staged reading of part of the text, which brings together drama, essays and lectures by Almada, a central figure of Portuguese modernism.

“This show proposes to resume a project of the author: the connection of two plays: Deseja-se Mulher and S.O.S., in a diptych he would have called Tragédia da Unidade (Tragedy of Unity). Here it is called S.O.S. Aquela Noite. The actors take on the characters of the plays and also comment on Almada's thought, in an abstract place that is intended to be concrete by the end of the show,” the creators explain.

S.O.S. Aquela noite will premiere in November at the Teatro do Bairro Alto, in Lisbon. The project was developed throughout the year in partnership with CEDANSA, the Institute of Philosophy and the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon, where the documentary archive of Almada Negreiros and Sarah Affonso is deposited.

Regarding Almada Negreiros' dramaturgy, Fernando Cabral Martins writes: “Such is the modernist theatre of Almada Negreiros: vibrant, thoughtful, realistic and almost abstract. And poetic, too, as in the stories of missed encounters he tells, between characters moving in a transition zone between concrete cases and ideas, people and symbols. And unique, always.”
